help the mccradys: volume 3

So, our seller is taking her formal dining room light fixture with her when she leaves...which is fine with us because it is an antique Japanese-inspired glass fixture which is obviously not our taste, and it obviously means a lot to her anyway. SO, that will be one of the very first purchases we'll be making because we can't have a dining room without a light fixture! :)

This is actually proving to be one of the harder decisions for us because whatever finish this fixture is, we'll want to make all the other ones in the kitchen and living room match. (Remember, they're all brass so we're going to be spray painting them for a more modern and unified look.) We can't decide between brushed nickel (an opaque silver) or oil rubbed bronze (a dark brown) look. I think we're both leaning toward the latter, but who knows.

Here are some that I like...
And, just for kicks, since we're closing in 2 days, here's a glimpse of what our dining room looks like. Remember that basically everything in this picture will be different :) We're changing the window to have blinds and pretty, long draperies, we're probably painting the walls, we'll have a long dark brown dining room table and chairs, and we'll most likely have a matching cabinet to go with it. Oh, and eventually hardwood floors and a pretty rug. Just to name a few...
Thoughts?

We have the very first light fixture you mentioned in our dining room. We bought ours from Lowe's and then we bought all the rest of the fixtures to match: one for the breakfast nook, one for the entrance, and one for the area in between the dining room and kitchen. It's a cohesive look and I love the rubbed bronze look. I do tend to go darker on things though.

On another note, my brother-in-law has the brushed nickel/stainless steel lighting in his house (including a matching ceiling fan). He has an open floor plan and stainless steel appliances, so it looks really good together.

Good luck!

I'm a fan of the oil rubbed bronze. My MIL has the 3rd light fixture in her dining room and I love it!

I'm coming out of my blog stalking now...

I think you should go with the oil rubbed bronze. It seems like everyone has the nickel. I love the dark brown look!

My parents have one JUST like the third one, if not the same, and it is beautiful in person!

I like the first one and the finish on it...it's very traditional and I think it will continue to be stylish for years to come! Can't wait to see all your before and afters!

We've never met, but I still have an opinion on your dining room. I think that if you are going to have a dark wood table, then a more antiqued light fixture would be more complementary. I think a shiny fixture would look out of place. Hope all the moving goes well!

Hi! It is Sariah from over at Enchantresses 3. How exciting to be moving into your new home! The only advice I have about spray painting your light fixtures is to do it in short bursts. Spray, spray, spray, not sprrrraaaayyyy. Does that make sense? Congrats!

I just finished my hunt for a new one! I found this great website for lighting fixtures at great prices! www.bellacor.com
We ended up ordering this one...

Best part was I didn't pay for shipping OR tax! I paid the price on the website, nothing more! We were very pleased.
Good luck!

James and I have the first one and we love it. It seems pretty bright actually and we have it above our island in the kitchen. I hope your day on Thursday goes great!

I think they are all actually pretty similar in general style, so any would be beautiful. My husband, from his architect's perspective, would tell you that if you with silver you need to have silver fixtures throughout the entire house, and if you go with bronze, stick with the bronze theme. Don't know if that helps or not. :) I cannot freaking wait to see the pics of the inside!!!

Hi Jennifer,

I found your blog from Erin P's blog and am also a Baylor grad. :) My hubby and I moved into our house (in Austin) about 14 months ago and are also looking at dining room fixtures. They are all cute, but I especially like the first dark-bronzey one. Where is it from?

Thanks!
